Most people looking to make money online often start by creating and selling their own digital products, like ebooks or courses. It seems logical, start by building something you think people might want. However, this approach often misses the mark.
Reflecting on my own experiences, I found that real income didn't come from creating my own products initially. Instead, I earned over $50,000 by guiding people through decisions about existing products, specifically through affiliate marketing.
Here's why this worked. Many new creators obsess over crafting the perfect product. They spend time researching, building, and polishing before launching, only to face disappointing sales. They often blame the niche or algorithms, missing the key issue: they start with a product instead of focusing on existing demand. They guess at what people *might* buy, rather than identifying what people are already considering.
I learned this gradually. Instead of promoting random items, I focused on software tools that I used and understood well, like no-code platforms and newsletter services. Rather than producing another ebook on online income, I provided honest guides and comparisons, such as the best website builders for beginners or tutorials on starting a landing page.
What I found is that the world doesn’t need more generic info-products. People search for answers to specific questions. When someone is choosing between Webflow and Framer, or seeking the right email tool, they want reliable advice about established options.
Now, there are constant opportunities. New tools and platforms launch weekly, creating confusion. People often search for "best AI tool for writers" or "ConvertKit alternatives." When such questions frequently arise, they indicate demand, and a chance to earn a commission by providing clear, helpful guidance.
If I were starting today, here's what I'd do: 1. Identify a software category with high search traffic and active decision-making. 2. Use the main tools in that field to understand them. 3. Create honest, informative content, comparisons, reviews, tutorials. 4. Include affiliate links where they naturally aid the reader. 5. Let the commissions be a byproduct, not the central aim.
Most rush to the last step, focusing on selling without understanding what information people genuinely need. The secret is to flip the equation: begin by asking, "What choices are people struggling with, and how can I assist them?"
You don't need to invent the next big product. Instead, find areas where many are stuck and help them navigate those choices. Provide clarity. When you do that well, income will follow.
That’s the strategy that worked for me. If you’re aiming to build online income from scratch, don’t start with creating a digital product. Focus on being helpful, assist people in making informed choices in a confusing market. The money will come in due time.
